NatureServe recently hosted the first in-person Biodiversity Without Boundaries (BWB) conference since 2017 in Pittsburgh, PA. Over 150 attendees joined the conference in-person, and 100 more attended virtually. Sean O’Brien embarked on the sixth leg of the NatureServe Network Van Tour! Together with the new Van Tour Assistant Thea Cole, Sean will visit Natural Heritage Programs in Nevada, California, Oregon, Idaho, Utah, Nebraska, Colorado, and Wyoming throughout the spring. 2021 was a big year for the iMapInvasives Network! 122,876 presence records were submitted by natural resource professionals and community scientists working to protect natural resources and biodiversity from the negative impacts of invasive species across North America. Take a look at the first-ever iMapInvasives annual report to learn more about the wide variety of projects undertaken by iMapInvasives programs, as well as new features.

Prompted by anecdotal evidence of the declines in North American fireflies, scientists from the Xerces Society, the Albuquerque BioPark, and the IUCN Firefly Specialist Group completed Red List assessments of 132 firefly species. They published a paper reporting that at least 14% and possibly a third of the species in the US and Canada are threatened with extinction. At the request of the Xerces Society, NatureServe converted the Red List assessments to NatureServe global rank assessments to ensure that results are available on NatureServe Explorer. The Xerces Society subsequently used the NatureServe ranks in a wide-ranging report on firefly conservation.

Both the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and the National Council for Air and Stream Improvement (NCASI) recently signed Data License Agreements that grant them access to data from the NatureServe Network. These data enable BLM Headquarters and Field Office Staff to understand where imperiled species have been documented both on and off BLM lands, aiding resource management planning and helping BLM understand their relative stewardship responsibility. As for NCASI, ongoing access to range-wide at-risk species data on and around the lands they own and manage supports their ability to more effectively screen forestry operations for proximity to at-risk species and habitats.
