Last year was an exceptionally busy and productive year for NatureServe Canada as they developed and implemented a broad suite of new and existing biodiversity science and conservation projects. Check out their 2021-2022 Annual Report to learn more.

The small whorled pogonia (Isotria medeoloides), a federally threatened species, was last documented in the Green Mountain State in a 1902 photograph. After following a lead from a community scientist’s post on iNaturalist, staff botanists at the Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department confirmed a population of Isotria in the state.

The Tennessee Natural Areas Program is nearing the completion of a water quality improvement project at the Sequatchie Cave State Natural Area, which is home to two rare species: the federally endangered royal springsnail (Marstonia ogmorhaphe) and state-protected Sequatchie caddisfly (Glyphopsyche sequatchie).

For several years, Wyoming’s only federally listed invertebrate animal—the threatened Western glacier stonefly (Zapada glacier)—was thought to occur in only three places in Montana and Wyoming. Thanks to survey efforts and genetic analysis, Wyoming Natural Diversity Database scientists found two new locations for the species. This discovery suggests the need for surveys in other mountain ranges.

The North Carolina Natural Heritage Program and the North Carolina Department of Public Safety (DPS) met at the Lumber River Swamp for a new partnership to dedicate a portion of a correctional facility as a nature preserve. They are hopeful that this new partnership, developed as a result of Governor Cooper’s commitment to address climate change, will result in more dedicated nature preserves on the 36,000 acres managed by DPS.
