U.S. Bureau of Land Management - NatureServe Partnership

The U.S. Bureau of Land Management (BLM) administers some of the most ecologically diverse and biologically important lands under federal ownership. The NatureServe Network is dedicated to collecting and disseminating data on rare and imperiled plants and animals, and ecosystems of the Western Hemisphere. Working as partners, the NatureServe Network is providing the BLM with access to information on the status and location of at-risk plants and animals for the entire western region.

BLM’s use of NatureServe data is governed by a Data License Agreement. Under this Data License Agreement, NatureServe can provide BLM with the most comprehensive information on rare and imperiled species in and around BLM lands and facilitate the exchange of information between our organizations on the status and location of species occurring on BLM lands.

Through the use of scientifically rigorous and standardized methods and tools, NatureServe and its Network Programs can provide quality scientific data. The NatureServe Network comprises more than 1,000 conservation professionals across the U.S., Canada, and Latin America. BLM’s partnership with the NatureServe Network, including securing information through a data license, supports NatureServe in keeping this data as comprehensive and current as possible.

Current and comprehensive species data supports BLM’s ability to conduct accurate analyses of at-risk plants and animals, thereby supporting more successful conservation actions. In addition, the partnership between NatureServe and BLM benefits the general public by ensuring that BLM will be able to make scientifically informed decisions to guide conservation priorities on publicly owned federal land.

Data License Agreement

NatureServe has provided BLM with a Data License Agreement for the duration of one-year (expiring September 30, 2017) to access precise-scale data for all taxa with status under the U.S. Endangered Species Act and/or ranked by NatureServe as being imperiled or critically imperiled on a global or range wide basis (G1 or G2), hereinafter “at-risk” in the following states and jurisdictions, where available: AK, AZ, CA, CO, ID, MT, ND, NM, Navajo Nation, OR, SD, UT, WA, WY. The location data for these at-risk species are provided as statewide or jurisdiction-wide data (i.e., not just species locations on BLM lands).

In order to access the licensed dataset, you must review the Data License Agreement (see PDF on this page).

Final Step for Becoming a NatureServe Certified Data User

By submitting your contact information below you acknowledge that you have viewed all four Data Use Training videos, completed the corresponding Data Use Training quizzes, and read and understood the terms of the Data License Agreement (see PDF on this page) between NatureServe and the U.S. Bureau of Land Management.

Once you submit your contact information below, your information will be verified and you will become registered as a NatureServe Certified Data User and are responsible for following the terms of the Data License Agreement.  You should receive an email with instructions for how to access the licensed NatureServe dataset within 2 working days.  If you do not receive an email in this timeframe, please send us an email with the subject line "Request to access BLM data".
